Peermade Development Society to launch a “Start Up Project”

Peermade Development Society (PDS) is all set to launch a ‘Start Up Project’ (incubator) for converting grassroots innovation (innovations from informal sector) into rural enterprises. Department of Science and Technology (DST-GoI) under its i-STED (Innovation –Science , Technology Enterprise Development) has approved a five year grant support of 2.33 Crores to Peermade Development Society (PDS) for converting grassroots innovation into rural enterprises. This the first project approved by DST, GoI at national level for converting grassroots innovations into rural enterprises. Under this progarmme, rural entrepreneurs will be identified and trained to start enterprises based on grassroots innovation. The project will focus the rural entrepreneurs of hilly areas in the districts of Idukki , Wyanad , Ernamkulam Pathanamthita and Kottayam . Innovations in sustainable agriculture (Pepper and cardamom varieties & its processing) and employment generation (Electrical Tyre retreading) are selected for converting rural enterprises in the first phase.

The programme will be launched and inaugurated by the Bishop of Kanjirappally Diocese His Excellency, Mar Matthew Arackal on 2nd of November at Peermade. The function will be attended by National award winning grassroots innovators, entrepreneurs,representatives from farmers clubs etc. A.K Mital Advisor of NSTEDB (National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board) is also expected to attend the programme. PDS is active in the field of grassroots innovations for the last 18 years and is the regional collaborator of National Innovation Foundation, GoI and Honey Bee Network in the state of Kerala. PDS has scouted more than 1000 innovations from all over Kerala, out of which, more than 50 innovations got national level recognition from National Innovation Foundation. Recently PDS has established a museum for grassroots innovation. More than 100 innovations are exhibited in the museum. Touch screen Kiosk explaining the features of innovation with the help of audiovisual aids is the other attraction of the Museum. PDS has got 3 national awards from National Innovation Foundation and International Award from FAO for promoting grassroots innovation. Various national and international agencies such as DST, NABARD, NIF, FAO and UNDP are supporting PDS in this endeavor. Njallani variety of cardamom, Young Budding in rubber, Kumpukkal pepper variety, Thekkan pepper variety, kadukamakkal nutmeg variety etc are some of the farmer innovations documented by PDS and which were recognized at national level.
