Background

Peermade Development Society (PDS) is a national level organisation engaged in the sustainable development of tribals, marginal and small farmers, indigenous communities, women and children in India. Established in the year 1980 PDS is registered as a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) under the Travancore Cochin Literacy and Charitable Societies Registration Act of 1955. Its formal launch was the culmination of lifelong interaction of its founder and Bishop Emeritus of Kanjirapally diocese Mar Mathew Arackal with the rural and tribal communities in Idukki district of Kerala.

Working with people over the past decades enabled PDS to evolve several replicable models in rural development. PDS’ flagship programmes of Organic farming, water shed development, rural health and wellness, climate change, food security, rural technology and grass root innovations, micro enterprise development and research and development have been appreciated and recognised by several national and international agencies. One of the greatest achievements of PDS is that it could motivate and encourage several governmental and nongovernmental organisations in and outside Kerala to replicate and adopt these models for sustainable rural development.
